Why This Book Matters
La Passion de Servir is more than just a personal memoir — it is a collective memory of the Congolese diaspora in Washington, D.C. It documents the founding and evolution of the Congolese Community of Washington Metropolitan (CCWM) and celebrates the contributions of individuals, churches, and organizations that have shaped our community.
From the early days of CCWM to the rich tapestry of choirs, churches, and cultural groups, Jean takes us behind the scenes to understand how far we’ve come and what still lies ahead.
A Legacy of Leadership
Jean Mayaka served as the first elected president of CCWM and has spent over two decades supporting the community through various organizations, faith-based initiatives, and musical contributions. His resume spans professional achievements, nonprofit leadership, and a deep commitment to empowering others.
During our conversation, he shared the joys and challenges of writing the book, the importance of documenting our stories, and a powerful message to the next generation:
“Don’t let your story go untold. Write it. Share it. Someone needs to hear it.”
